Everyone’s talking about the weather but we’d rather talk about books, the books of the authors we represent specifically.

I think our most exciting recent sale is clearly on behalf of  James W. Tabor who has sold two new thrillers to Random House, the first one destined to be their lead title in Spring 2012 and currently titled THE DEEP ZONE.  These books feature two great main characters and Jim’s hard won expertise in the world of deep cave exploration.  His non-fiction book. BLIND DESCENT, set in this perilous world continues to sell well and the trade paperback edition will be out soon.

GAIL MARTIN’s first book for Orbit is out, THE SWORN and she continues to build a large audience for her compelling works of fantasy.  She’s begun work on a new series.

KAREN MILLER has delivered A BLIGHT OF MAGES to both Harper/Australia and Orbit and both editions will be out by the end of the summer.  I believe it’s her best book to date.

We have your scary, fun Halloween picture book ready, ERIC ROHMANN’s BONEDOG will be coming from Roaring Brook Press this Fall and its another example of his brilliant storytelling and exquisite illustrations.

For those of you who have been waiting for John Scalzi’s next novel, the wait is over, FUZZY NATION, his re-boot of the classic SF novel by H. Beam Piper is coming in July.  John has some other big news coming via Hollywood but I’ve been embargoed.  In two weeks time, the curtain will be parted and…….

MARYJANICE DAVIDSON’S Undead adventures continue and the new book is in for publication this July, do look out for UNDEAD AND UNDERMINED, Undead and as compelling as ever.

New York Times Bestselling author ELAINE COFFMAN returns with THE RETURN OF BLACK DOUGLAS in April.

Kim Terry has just signed a 3 book contract with St. Martin’s for a new paranormal series.

Enjoy

Life Plus 70

I’m sure you recognize the provenance of that title—current Copyright law grants authors a term of the author’s life plus seventy years. It’s an extraordinary grant by any measure and I can’t think of anything comparable in patents or any other system that governs intellectual property. Copyright, however, is only part of what governs the […]

Eternal Reserve

A group of papers recently crossed my desk that reminded me of the permanent or eternal reserve that many publishers keep on individual books. I suspect that few authors are aware of this, but it’s a serious issue that affects almost every author. The root of this problem is that many publishers keep a tiny […]

All About Royalties

Royalties, mainly on the sale of paper based books, remain the primary source of author income. I’m going to explain the fundamental concepts you need to understand how they work and are calculated. The following is an outline, more like course notes, than a lecture. I want to keep this short and to the point, […]

Artist or Entertainer

For the career writer, “artist” or “entertainer” remains a perennial problem. I use the term “artist” to distinguish the most personal, creative goals of a writer. The “artist” wants to tell the stories that the writer wants to tell, regardless of their commercial viability or any other external value. Every writer has an “artist” inside […]

Internet Threat: How the Internet May Threaten Nonfiction Authors’ Incomes

I don’t predict the future. In fact, I’m sick of hearing predictions about the future. It’s almost the only thing you ever read anymore. As an agent, I try to predict the present. To do so, I’ve done a lot of work lately researching the impact the Internet is having on writing and publishing. And, […]
